However, as we’ve come to learn more and more about this disease, experts are now classifying it as a type of neurotransmitter dysfunction. (Neurotransmittters are chemical agents that the brain uses to tell the body what to do). FM is one of the most misdiagnosed diseases that face physicians today. One of the reasons may be that neurotransmitters affect every part of our body and this is the reason why symptoms can show up anywhere and can fluctuate from hour to hour. Research into the causes of FM are still underway. However, there seems to be a genetic predisposition coupled with a trigger event, such as an illness or an accident that stimulates the onset of FM. They’re never able to reach the delta or deep sleep stage where your body releases rebuilding chemicals that repair and grow tissues. Growth hormone, one of the most abundant rebuilding chemicals, is released during delta sleep and goes to work repairing and growing tissues. Since FM patients never experience delta sleep, they have low growth hormone levels. This translates to an inability of the body to repair itself. Connective tissue is the main repair mechanism in the body and its’ chemistry monitors inflammatory response and delivers fluids, including white blood cells and antibodies, to fight infection. Inflammation is caused by the release of PGE1 Prostaglandin and is sustained by an enzyme called Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2). It is interesting that cancer cells are surrounded by an abnormally heavy concentration of COX2 enzymes. If one could inhibit COX2 enzymes, they could control inflammation and possibly cancer. (This is substantiated by evidence of less can-cers among chronic aspirin users). Many years ago drug companies found that aspirin inhibited COX2 but at the same time inhibited COX1 which is a Protective Prostaglandin for the lining of the digestive tract and blood vessels. Without adequate COX1 you can have ulcers and leaking of the blood vessels. So, for temporary use, aspirin is fine but extended use causes serious side effects. Then came the "miracle" of the COX2 inhibitors - Vioxx, Bextra, Celebrex, etc. These didn't cause ulcers and weak blood vessels and the expectations were high. But later we found that the great results experienced were offset by the fact that these anti-inflammatories caused heart attacks and strokes because they induced clots in the blood. The risks were so great that the FDA temporarily took them off the market. Remember that inflammation causes pain - both acute and chronic. If an anti-inflammatory product could be found that would inhibit COX2 without side effects, you could stop the cause of pain. Interestingly enough, a common herb known as turmeric contains curcumin which is an even better anti-inflammatory than Cortisone, one of the most powerful of the steroids. We have used curcumin for years in formulas for both cancer and arthritis, but we recently isolated a factor (a curcuminoid) in curcumin which is approximately 100 times as potent as curcumin in reduc-ing inflammation. When combined with DLPA (dl phenylalanine) and boswellia, you will experi-ence one of the most effective, natural anti-inflammatory, pain relievers you have ever used or heard of. You really need to try it to experience the almost miraculous effect this has on chronic inflammatory pain, such as chronic back pain, sciatica, arthritis and old injuries. All this plus you could be protecting yourself against future cancers which might be initiated by chronic in-flammation.
